This will tell you how to use transparency in the GIMP. This may be pretty easy to figure out, but it took me forever to understand how to do it. Firstly, open the GIMP, and open an image. Next, at the top of the image's window, click "Layers". Then from that drop down, click "Transparency". The first option should be "Add Alpha Channel". Click that. Now, the image has the transparent background layer. Finally, all you have to do is select the eraser from the tools, and erase anything on the image that you'd want to be transparent. Dont forget to save the image as a .gif (or .png, but it wont work in IE6).
